Today I encourage my students to submit some of their writing to a new classroom website: Jay’s Movie Definition Dictionary.
My instructions to our Film History Research Project call for them to explain abstract concepts, but copying definitions out of the dictionary won’t cut it. I tell them to support their ideas on their own terms. Definition writing is both fun and unique, for writers can use variety of patterns and techniques of arrangement to engage with their readers. If you ask me, the key to successful writing is to read, discuss, and think of different possibilities.
Below I practice with “schizophrenia.” I first defined it in my own words; then, I looked to Youtube for additional support. I found the story of Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett. Syd was a bohemian, a poet, and a young man who displayed multiple personalities. I was able edit a brief cut from the documentary in my Youtube Studio. On the new website I will position it right underneath my definition.
