This week many of my students are turning in community profiles. They’ve selected an interesting person from their lives who in some way represents an important idea, social situation, trend or problem. We worked HARD! I’m happy many of them explored the stories of family and friends. They were able to obtain knowledge and perspective that was unavailable to them through traditional academic research strategies. I recently came across Dweezil Zappa’s moving tribute to his father and his music. Next semester, for the introduction of this assignment, I plan on sharing a video clip from Dweezil and a writing except from his father. It’s all about opening our minds to new ideas ( something that may be sadly missing in today’s classrooms…)
