In several of my English classes, I’ve asked my students to select a movie based on a historical event, idea, character. I call it a “Film History Research Paper.” We compare what we see on the screen with what we find in the college databases. For example, some of my students are writing about the personal hardships and the abstract painting of Frida Kahlo. Others are developing process analyses of how the Titanic went down in the freezing waters of the North Atlantic. We explore the story behind the story. I think my students are into it. Our classroom discussions brim with fresh insight.
This week we define key concepts associated with our topics, but we leave the dictionary of it. Our goal is to explain these ideas on our own terms. I hope to see both personal involvement and objective viewpoint in the writing. Below I model how I chart and organize my ideas for a definition of “Folk Heroes” with help from the film Bonnie and Clyde. I follow it with a glimpse of how my writing will look in my classroom blog.
