A few years back I introduced a writing project to a basic skills class. It was a process analysis essay, and I called it “Immigrant Stories.” Each student had to trace his/her family’s journey from Mexico to California. I had them research background for their family’s point of origin. They explained any complications of coming across. They discussed the challenge of settling in. It wasn’t easy. They had to get their asses off of Wikipedia and talk to someone who knew their story.
Below, I share my most recent blog post for my reading of A.M. Homes’s memoir The Mistress’s Daughter. Like anything and everything she writes, nothing is easy. She digs down to her darkest places for the truth.
